Accompanied assignment housing in Spain: placing an employee with a partner or family in Málaga
A practical guide for HR and Global Mobility teams placing an employee who relocates with a partner or children on a multi-month Málaga assignment — what accompanied assignment housing has to get right, and what to verify before you sign.

What changes when the employee does not travel alone
A solo assignee can be housed on convenience. An accompanied assignee cannot. The moment a partner or children are part of the move, accompanied assignment housing in Spain has to serve two or three separate daily routines running from the same address at the same time — the employee's working day, the partner's job search or remote role, and, if there are children, a school run and a homework hour. Most failed placements are not caused by the wrong city. They are caused by accommodation that works for one person and quietly does not work for three.
That has budget consequences worth naming early. An accompanied placement usually needs more bedrooms, more storage, real laundry, a kitchen that supports proper cooking rather than reheating, and somewhere for the accompanying partner to take a video call without displacing anyone. It also tends to run longer than a solo assignment, because families do not move mid-term for the sake of a marginally better rate. Budget the placement as a household, not as a headcount.
The questions to settle before you look at any property
Before you brief a supplier, get answers from the assignee and the business:
- Who is travelling, and for how much of the assignment. Partners and children sometimes arrive weeks after the employee. That affects the start date you contract on, not the size of residence you need.
- Does the partner intend to work. A remote-working partner changes the specification more than an extra child does. Two people on calls in one home need separated space and reliable bandwidth.
- Schooling. International, bilingual or state schooling determines which parts of the metropolitan area are viable and when the family can realistically arrive. Admissions timetables rarely bend to assignment start dates.
- Car or no car. A family with one car and a working partner will need a second way to get around. Parking is a real constraint in central Málaga and should be confirmed in writing, not assumed.
- What is being shipped. If the family is shipping belongings, the lease has to start before they arrive. If not, the residence has to be genuinely furnished — beds, linen, a working kitchen — from day one.
Specification that actually matters for a family placement
In practice, five things separate accommodation a family stays in from accommodation a family leaves after six weeks.
Bedrooms with their own bathrooms. Shared bathrooms are the friction point in a household of three or four with different start times. En-suite arrangements remove a daily negotiation.
Sound separation. Multi-month living in a building with other residents only works if the floors and walls do the job. Ask specifically what acoustic treatment exists between units rather than accepting a general assurance of quiet.
A workspace that is not the dining table. When both adults work, the home needs at least one place to close a door — or an on-site alternative within the building.
In-unit laundry. A washer and dryer inside the residence is not a luxury for a family; it is the difference between a normal week and a logistical problem.
Outdoor space. A private terrace changes how a family experiences a Spanish assignment, particularly with young children and particularly in July and August.
At Palacete 10, four of the five residences have two en-suite bedrooms and every residence has a private terrace, an in-unit washer and dryer, a fully equipped kitchen, air conditioning and heating, ceiling fans in all bedrooms and one secure parking space. Two residences add a guest WC. One, Toro, has a private home office and is accessible. The building has a residents-only 24/7 work suite on site, which is where a second working adult can go when the residence is busy. Sound-insulating floating floors run between residences, high-speed fibre is installed throughout the building, and each residence has its own secure Wi-Fi network and password. The details of what is included are set out under corporate housing and amenities.
Location decisions that affect the whole household
For a solo assignee, proximity to the office usually wins. For a family, the daily routine matters more than the commute. The question is whether the household can function on foot: shops, a pharmacy, a supermarket, cafés and public transport within a short walk, in a neighbourhood that is residential rather than turned over to visitors.
Málaga makes that reasonably straightforward. At Calle Actriz Rosario Pino 10, public transport and everyday shops, cafés, supermarkets and pharmacies are a 1-minute walk, the historic centre and lifestyle districts are a 15-minute walk (1 km), María Zambrano train station is 10 minutes (3 km), and Málaga Airport (AGP) is 16 minutes (12 km). Málaga TechPark is 19 minutes, 17 km. The full picture is on the location page. The practical value of those numbers is that a partner without a car is not stranded and a school run does not consume an hour each way.
Contracting an accompanied placement
Under Real Decreto-ley 29/2026, in force since 8 October 2026, the old arrendamiento por temporada (a seasonal lease under Title III of the LAU) no longer applies to housing. Temporary housing for an assignment is now governed as an arrendamiento de vivienda temporal under Title II of the LAU. The contract must expressly state a real, demonstrable temporary cause justifying why the tenant is temporarily away from their habitual home, and the landlord bears the burden of proof. Stays are freely agreed for periods over 31 days and generally capped at 12 months including extensions. How this framework applies where a company acts as the tenant and the employee as the occupant is not yet settled, so a Spanish lawyer should confirm the contractual structure before signing. Furthermore, Congress must validate the decree-law within 30 days, so teams should verify the current legal position when executing agreements.
Contracting company to company ensures the employee is not personally liable and provides your finance department with a single monthly VAT-compliant (IVA) invoice covering everything. Utilities are managed by the operator, ensuring water and power are active on arrival without the arriving family needing to navigate local utility accounts.
A few things to verify rather than assume, because they vary by supplier and by tax year: local school admission deadlines with the school directly, residence and registration formalities with your immigration adviser, and any personal tax exposure with your mobility tax provider. Lease terms at Palacete 10 are agreed per contract, and cleaning arrangements and utility allowances are confirmed in the proposal.
More contracting detail — multi-residence placements, framework agreements, full buyouts, and billing without a Spanish bank account — is answered on the FAQ page.
One supplier, one contract, one VAT-compliant monthly invoice, residences that are move-in ready with keyless access, and enquiries answered within 24 hours. If you have an accompanied placement in Málaga from October 2026 onward, request a corporate proposal.
